EPI Schedule Bangladesh 2018: Latest Vaccine List & Timetable

EPI stands for Expanded Programme on Immunization. It was started worldwide by World Health Organization in 1974. It is the process of increasing the number of vaccines in the vaccinations schedule in order to provide a wider coverage against infectious diseases among the population of the whole country. The EPI schedule in Bangladesh is here:

EPI Schedule Bangladesh 2018 Latest Vaccine List & Timetable

6th week of age: BCG, Penta 1, OPV 1, PCV 1
10th week of age: Penta 2, OPV 2, PCV 2
14th week of age: Penta 3, OPV 3, IPV
18th week of age: PCV 3
9th completed month: MR (Measles and Rubella)
15th completed month: MR (Measles and Rubella)

BCG: First of all, to protect the child from Tuberculosis bacillus, we use Bacillus Calmette-Guerin or BCG vaccine intradermally. The vaccine consists of only one dose, usually given in the latest EPI schedule, from the first day after birth up to the 42nd day (6th week of age). But, you can give at any time after this period also.

OPV: To protect the child from Poliomyelitis, we use Oral Polio Vaccine or OPV. And the vaccine consists of 3 doses, at the 6th, 10th and 14th weeks of age.

Penta: Penta (means 5) contains 5 vaccines named Diphtheria, Pertussis, Tetanus, Haemophilus Influenza and Hepatitis-B vaccines. It also consists of 3 doses, given intramuscularly at the same time as OPV.

PCV: Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine or PCV has 3 intramuscular doses at 6th, 10th and 18th week of age. As a result, It protects the children from Streptococcus Pneumoniae bacteria which causes Pneumonia.

MR: Measles & Rubella vaccine is given subcutaneously in 2 doses at the end of 9th and 15th months of age to protect the child against these 3 diseases. Previously, MMR was the name of this vaccine (the extra M was for Mumps). Now, the authority has stopped giving Mumps vaccine. So, the patients of Mumps is increasing day by day.

Therefore, EPI Schedule has brought an astonishing achievement in the health sector in Bangladesh. As a result, Bangladesh has been able to reduce the above-listed diseases to a greater extent than many developed countries in the world. So, we all should follow this schedule and protect our children from these deadly diseases.

  1. According to this EPI chart, my baby got all the vaccines. But, when I went for Rota virus vaccine, they gave me a private vaccination card & there was mentioned the date of Hepatitis B booster dose. I want to know, after completion of all the govt vaccines is this booster dose necessary? Baby is 16 months old.

    1. EPI Schedule includes only the free vaccines. The Hepatitis B vaccine includes 4 doses among which the 4th one is the booster dose, given after 1 year of the 3rd dose, and is not free. So, you should buy that vaccine. The booster dose is recommended for those who are immunocompromised and for children (as they have less immunity) in order to maintain the required amount of antibody in their blood for a longer period of time.

  2. Hi, how are you? My baby is now 15 months old. After MR vaccine he developed fever and after 3 days he got multiple rash whole the body but now fever subsided. What may be the cause and what can I do now? May it be any hypersensitivity reaction to the vaccine?

    1. Hello. I am fine. It may be hypersensitivity reaction and the rashes may be caused by Measles virus. Seek a pediatrician to confirm it. If it is due to measles, you may need to visit Infectious Disease Hospital, Mohakhali, Dhaka.

  3. Want to know the vaccine IPV. What’s is the elaboration of this term?

    1. IPV means Inactivated Polio Vaccine. The vaccines available for vaccination against polio are the IPV and the OPV (Oral Polio Vaccine). IPV is given as a shot in the arm or leg.

  4. Dear sir, Please talk about vaccine schedule.

  5. Measles and Rubella are same diseases? Or what’s the difference Measles & Rubella?

    1. No. They are different diseases caused by different viruses. Measles is also known as Roseola. Rubella is also known as German Measles. You can learn more about these diseases here: Measles and Rubella.

  6. In which year EPI program has started in Bangladesh….

    1. The World Health Organization (WHO) initiated the Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) in May 1974 with the objective to vaccinate children throughout the world. But in Bangladesh EPI was started in 1979 as a pilot project. But coverage was below 2% until 1985. Then, Government of Bangladesh started expanding the program. The intensified immunization program was expanded in phases. It covered 8 thana in 1985(first phase); 190 thana in 1988(second phase) and whole country by the end of 1989. 7. Today my 47 days old boy child was given three vaccines except for BCG. Vaccine center informed BCG is not available in the area for more than 4 months. It is Garpara, Manikganj. Is it true BCG vaccine is not available/shortage in BD? Is it possible to give BCG vaccine give to my child after it becomes available in BD?

    1. No, it is available elsewhere in Bangladesh. Contact nearby health centers to get the update. You can give the vaccine as soon you get it.

  8. Dr. Sujon Paul,
Hope you are well. Just yesterday my baby completed the first vaccination dose. His age is 46 days and 4 shot is given in his arm and leg. Now, my baby is feeling very week and have vomiting 4 times in today. His stool is very watery and looking very tired. Is it normal after vaccination or we should consult with a doctor?
I need your valuable suggestion. Please response as soon as possible.

    1. I think you should consult with a pediatrician as soon as possible. The symptoms you mentioned are not normal after the vaccine. So, don’t take any risk and consult a doctor.
